Piano Songs For All Degrees

Maybe one day you will be composing your own piano songs

Piano songs come in all sorts and styles. Every pianist loves to play some now and then, even if you prefer classical pieces. And although a song usually contains vocal parts, many have been rearranged for performance on piano only.

Let's take a closer look at some great composers of songs you can play as a pianist. Don't hesitate to click the links if you would like to know more about it!

There are short compositions in all types of music: pop, rock, jazz, folk, classical music... you name it.

Traditionally art songs were created for performance with piano accompaniment. Famous are those written by Franz Schubert who used a simple strophic form as if it was folk music.

Billy Joel, one of the most talented pianists and songwriters in pop music, became popular with Piano Man, which was a massive hit in the early Seventies. In its lyrics Joel writes with subtlety about the comfort people find in piano music.

Another famous singer-songwriter who has written many hit records is Elton John. The ebony and ivory keyboard always plays an important role in his compositions, and sheet music of his work is extremely popular.

John Lennon was responsible for Imagine, a classic among piano songs and loved by many pianists.

Of a more recent date are the songs by Keane and Coldplay, alternative rock bands from the UK that use the black and white keyboard frequently. Coldplays tabs are much sought after.

Of a whole different type is 'The Old Rugged Cross', a Christian song written in 1912 that remains enormously popular among performers and piano players. The same goes for the piano arrangement of the US national anthem 'The Star-Spangled Banner'.

These are just suggestions to show you how wide the variety is of what you can learn to play.

When searching for sheet music you will find that many pieces are available with varying degrees of difficulty. You can find the same song written in a manner that is appropriate for beginners as well as more advanced students.

This gives each and everyone the opportunity to play the piano songs they like while improving their skills.
